Mission Statement

The Stone Soup Cafe is a project of Stone Soup Foods.  The mission of Stone Soup Foods is to subsidize and provide specialized culinary arts training for homeless and very low-income individuals for whom few training opportunities exist.  Its goal, in addition to turning out individuals with marketable skills in the food service industry, is to generate income for its other programs that serve the homeless.

Purpose of Grant

The purpose of the grant to Stone Soup is to help Stone Soup set up and run the Stone Soup Cafe located in Portland, Maine.  The Cafe is located on Congress Street and is open for business for breakfast and lunch. Its facilities will produce the food for the Cafe and will act as a production kitchen in which soup and other items will be produced for sale through the Stone Soup kiosk in the Portland Public Market.  The Cafe and the kitchen will provide a site where Preble Street's clientele can get training in food production and the restaurant industry.  Upon completion of their training, Stone Soup will assist these individuals to get permanent jobs with steady income that will enable them to become contributing members of society.

Additional Information

Stone Soup Foods is affiliated with the Preble Street Resource Center in Portland, Maine.  Its clientele include homeless and very low-income individuals in need of shelter, food and general support.
