Additional Information

The Eastern Task Force on Aging was established in 1973 to improve the lives of older persons in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock and Washington counties. In 1974, Governor Curtis designated the Eastern Task Force as one of five Maine Area Agencies on Aging responsible for implementing the mandates of the federal Older Americans Act of 1965.

In July, 1983 the Eastern Task Force on Aging changed its name to the Eastern Area Agency on Aging to be consistent with the other AAA's. Recently, we shortened our name to the Eastern Agency on Aging to make it easier for people to say and remember.

Since its inception in 1973, Eastern has provided information and~ referral, outreach, consumer advocacy, transportation and circulated a quarterly~ newspaper to older persons in our four county area.

In 1983, a congregate housing services program for those who needed some assistance with housekeeping and personal care services began at Meadow View Apartments in Ellsworth. Since then, we've added five more congregate housing programs in Bangor, Brewer, Calais, Greenville and Orono. In September 1997, our assisted living services program at Merry Gardens Estates in Camden began to serve its first residents. Freeses Assisted Living in downtown Bangor's old Freeses' building, opened its doors in 2000. Stearns Assisted Living, newly opened in May of 2001, is a renovation of Millinocket's old Stearns' high school.~ ~

On July 1, 1992, Meals for Me and the Eastern Agency on Aging merged their operations. As a result, we have been able to serve more meals to a greater number of older people and provide a more comprehensive range of services to nutrition program participants.

Other new and successful programs initiated in recent years include the Partners in Caring Alzheimer's Respite Program, and Senior Solutions. When you turn to Senior Solutions, you will get information, guidance and planning to make the best use of home, community and residential services for long-term care.
