This year, we returned to the beautiful setting of the recently renovated, historic Wentworth Hotel in New Hampshire for our conference, “Strategies for Scaling Out Successful Social Innovations.”
Attendees participated in a day of workshopping with Andrew Wolk. Andrew Wolk is the President and CEO of the Root Cause Institute, an Action Tank for the Social Sector. Root Cause maximizes the social and economic impact of organizations by developing and promoting entrepreneurial social sector leadership. Andrew is also a Senior Lecturer at the Sloan School of Management at MIT, where he teaches a course in Social Entrepreneurship.
Andrew guided participants through interactive exercises to assess potential growth paths and create action plans specific to their organizations by showing grantees how to examine their: Readiness; Resources; Receptivity; Risks; and Returns to maximize successful growth.

Break-out groups explored a variety of Scale Strategies such as: Scaling Deep; Scaling through Dissemination; Scaling through Affiliate/Federation; and Scaling through Branches/Corporate Expansion. Then the groups developed short-term action plans based on these guidelines: What are the first 3 steps you must take to determine viability? Who is responsible for taking these steps? By when should they be completed? and What is the process for reviewing the information to decide if you are to move forward?
Post-conference evaluations completed by the participants deemed the workshop a great success - a rich and valuable exercise. And - as always - our grantees thrived on the opportunity to network among themselves, sharing key insights and resources.
