2007 (September) Site Visit: Poling Aquaculture Farm in Hillsborough, NH

On Wednesday, September 19th Great Bay sponsored its second site visit and luncheon at the beautiful Poling Aquaculture Farm in Hillsborough, NH. Melvin Murrel is Executive Director of Poling Aquaculture, which is a member of the New Hampshire Aquaculture Association.

Great Bay staff, grantees, and other guests (minus the black fly combat gear required on our previous visit) toured Poling Aquaculture's ponds, learned how each habitat is prepared, how the fish species are selected, and other basic hydroponics.

This see-through boat (below, right) was just one of Melvin's nifty aquatools!

After lunch, we strolled a few hundred yards down the road to a neighboring Alpaca Farm.

We learned about the beasts and the business, and about the significant ways in which fish and alpaca farmers living side by side in rural New Hampshire can help each other thrive.

The highlight of the day was one of Melvin's famous fish fries. Melvin won 3rd place honors in the national fish fry competition!
